Four things to check before you buy, so there are no surprises when you need help.
Most prices you see are introductory and go up at renewal. HomeServe's £6.49 boiler plan, for example, is expected to rise to £15.55 a month in year two if you don't claim. Hometree promises not to raise your price above inflation if you haven't claimed.
The excess (Hometree calls it a call-out fee) is what you pay each time you claim. Choosing a higher excess lowers your monthly price, but costs more when something goes wrong. Compare plans at the same excess where you can.
No. There's a waiting period at the start: 14 days with British Gas and 28 days with HomeServe. Problems that already exist when you join aren't covered, so it's best to get cover before something goes wrong.
All three providers will replace a boiler they can't repair if it's under 7 years old, with other conditions. If your boiler is older, you'll usually pay for a new one, though some providers offer a discount.
